TSOMORIRI LAKE
Tso Moriri Lake (also known as Lake Moriri or "Mountain Lake") is a breathtaking high-altitude saltwater lake in the remote Changthang Plateau of Ladakh, India, at 4,522 meters (14,836 feet). Stretching 19 km long and up to 3–5 km wide, it's the largest high-altitude lake entirely within India and a UNESCO Ramsar Wetland Conservation Reserve since 2002—the highest such site globally. Fed by glacial streams and springs, its brackish, crystal-clear waters shimmer in hues of blue against snow-capped peaks, supporting unique biodiversity like migratory birds (bar-headed geese, black-necked cranes), kiang (wild ass), marmots, and rare predators like snow leopards. Korzok Village, on the lake's northwestern shore at 4,570–4,595 meters (14,995–15,075 feet), is one of the world's highest permanent settlements, home to nomadic Changpa herders who graze yaks and pashmina goats. This duo offers serene isolation, spiritual depth, and raw Himalayan beauty—far less crowded than Pangong Tso.
How to Reach Tso Moriri Lake and Korzok
From Leh (Primary Route, 240 km, 6–7 hours): Follow Leh → Karu (36 km) → Upshi (13 km) → Kumdok (19 km) → Kere (53 km) → Chumathang (34 km) → Mahe (22 km) → Sumdo (10 km) → Namshang La → Korzok/Tso Moriri (53 km). Roads are mostly paved but winding with gravel stretches post-Sumdo; suitable for SUVs/hatchbacks.
From Pangong Tso (Alternate, 235 km, 7–9 hours): Via Man → Merak → Chushul → Tsaga La → Loma → Nyoma → Mahe → Sumdo → Korzok. Rougher terrain; requires extra PAP for Chushul. Ideal for multi-lake itineraries but fuel up in Leh (650–700 km to next pump if exiting via Manali).
By Air: Fly into Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh (flights from Delhi/Mumbai, INR 5,000–10,000). No direct flights to Korzok; heli-tours (INR 25,000/person round-trip) via Himalayan Heli Services are rare in October.
Trekking: Multi-day routes from Hanle (60–70 km, 3–4 days) or Tsokar—arrange with Leh operators (INR 10,000–15,000). Not recommended for beginners in October due to cold. Park vehicles at Korzok (no access to lake shores to protect the wetland—10–15 min walk to viewpoints).
Best Time to Visit and Weather (October 2025)
Peak Season: May–September (pleasant 10–25°C days, full access, festivals).
October (Current Shoulder Season): Ideal for solitude and golden autumn landscapes, but brace for chill—pack thermals, gloves, and windproof jackets. Days are sunny (low rain risk), nights freezing; lake views are pristine before ice forms. Avoid if prone to cold or altitude issues. By late October/November, passes may close sporadically due to snow.
Winter (Nov–Apr): Extreme (-10 to -25°C), frozen lake, limited stays; roads open but risky.
Activities:
Lake Exploration: Walk pebble shores (no swimming—freezing/brackish), photography from viewpoints (hilltop panoramas of half-moon bay).
Wildlife Spotting: Binoculars for kiang herds, birds (300+ species), or rare lynx—guided eco-walks (INR 500–1,000).
Korzok Monastery: 300–400-year-old Drukpa-lineage gompa (free entry, donations welcome) with Shakyamuni Buddha statue, restored thangka paintings, and lake vistas. Join evening prayers for chants.
Village Life: Interact with Changpa nomads—learn pashmina weaving or yak herding (respect privacy). Short hikes to Kyagar Tso (small "Lake of Joy," 5 km north).
Stargazing/Camping: Pristine skies; no light pollution.
Duration: 1–2 days; overnight in Korzok for sunrise over the lake.
Festivals
Korzok Gustor (July–August): 2-day masked dance festival at the monastery symbolizing good over evil; draws Changpa nomads with rituals, archery, and feasts. (Missed for October.)
Losar (Tibetan New Year, Feb–March): Prayers, dances at Korzok Gompa. October is quiet—focus on personal reflection amid migrating birds.
